However, most people don t bother to clean or sanitize the one thing in their home that produces the most allergy symptoms, their mattress. </p> <p class="MsoNormal">Mattresses are prime habitats for dust mites, germs and bacteria.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>  </span>A typical used mattress may have anywhere from 100,000 to 10 million mites inside. If that isn t bad enough, ten percent of the weight of a two year old pillow can be composed of dead mites and their droppings.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">Since we spend one third of our lives in bed, it just makes sense to have our mattresses cleaned and sanitized on a regular basis. The dust mite is second only to pollen in producing allergy related symptoms. <p class="MsoNormal">Fortunately, there are a few simple steps you can take to keep your mattress clean and sanitized.</p> <p class="MsoNormal"><b>1.</b> Thoroughly vacuum your mattresses once a week. Vacuum seams, perimeter cording, top, bottom, and sides using a powerful vacuum equipped with a certified HEPA filter.</p> <p class="MsoNormal"><b>2.</b> Sanitize the mattress. Try to avoid using water or harsh chemicals when cleaning a mattress. <a href="http://www.uvcleanpros.com/uvwand.html">The PureLight UV-C Light Wand</a> uses UV-C light (known as  germicidal light ) to kill 99.9% of dust mites, bedbugs, mold or anything else that may be living in your mattress. This is a dry process and is a great alternative to using steam cleaners.</p> <p class=MsoNormal><b>3.</b> Treat your mattress with an anti-allergen spray. Once you have vacuumed and sterilized your mattress, use an anti-allergen spray to neutralize the proteins in allergens such as dust mite droppings, cockroach droppings, cat dander and dog dander. Most sprays are odorless and colorless, so it won't stain your mattress or furnishings.</p> <p class=MsoNormal><b>4.</b> Wash and sanitize bedding regularly. In order to kill dust mites in sheets and blankets you must wash them in very hot water. The water temperature must be 130 degrees Fahrenheit.</p> <p class=MsoNormal><b>5.</b> Use zippered mattress and pillow coverings along with finely woven (pore size &lt; 10) vapor permeable sheets. Be sure to clean your mattress and pillows before applying the covers. Placing a cover over a dirty mattress or pillow can create an incubator affect and could make the problem worse.</p> <p class=MsoNormal>Keeping your mattress clean is only the first step in creating a healthy indoor living environment.
